These are the availible powers your character can have. A sorter reserves the right to deny you any of these powers for any reason. These powers are all supposed to be fairly scarce, especially birth powers. Portions of this thread are thanks to Bane Orwell. If you have something to add (a new power, or an extra note), PM admin.
Birth Powers
The following are powers granted to the person at birth. While they are present from the start, they can often take a long time to 'perfect', or do not become apparent until a later age.
Metamorphagus
A metamorphagus has the ability to change their appearance at will (plural: metamorphagi).
Parselmouth
A parselmouth is a person who can speak and clearly understand Parseltongue. Parseltongue is the language of snakes. To a regular human who cannot understand it, it sounds like hissing without taking a breath. In rare instances, basic parselmouth can be learnt or taught.
Seeing
Seeing can be considered the one form of true divination, or fortune telling, in the form of poetic prophecies (which can often be interpreted in multiple ways). Seers dont seem to have control over when they give prophecies, and usually dont remember them once making them. True Seers are very rare, and the power of Seeing will not be handed out easily. All prophecies will come true - so make sure you recieve permission from an admin before you make one (if you dont, it could be considered powerplaying or godmoding)
Defensive Precognition
Someone with Defensive Precognition sees a fraction of a second into the future, at a subconcious level, allowing you to more easily evade attacks.
Pyrokinesis
A pyrokinetic can manipulate and control flames, but must use a wand or other means to create the fire itself. Calmer flames are easier to manipulate than out of control fires.
Hydrokinesis
A hydrokinetic can manipulate and control water, but must use a wand or other means to create the water itself. It can be argued that highly advanced hydrokinetics can take water from the air in humid conditions, although this is quite difficult to accomplish. Still bodies of water are easier to control than running water or rain.
Empathy
Empathy is an uncontrolled ability that allows you to read the surface emotions of those around you. You can tell nothing more than basic emotions and who they belong to. It is countered by Occlumency and Telepathy.
Telepathy
Telepaths have the ability to send mental messages with their minds, to others closeby or with eye contact. Telepathy is not mind reading or mind control. Only other Telepaths can answer back. Occlumens and other Telepaths are able to block out nagging telepathic messages.
Learned Powers
Legilimency
Legilimency is a branch of magic involving the practice of extracting emotions and memories from another person's mind, in a manner akin to "mind reading." A skilled Legilimens would be easily able to detect truth or deception and would also be able to tell what a person was thinking or remembering. Legilimency only works on those closeby and is greatly enhanced when eye-contact is held, or a wand is used. Highly experienced Legilimens are better at hiding their Legilimency, silently tapping into an opponent's mind rather than forcefully intruding or using a wand. The counter to Legilimency is Occlumency.
Legilimency is a difficult skill to learn, and your character will need good justification for having it or studying it.
Occlumency
Occlumency is a branch of magic that concerns itself with closing one's mind against external penetration, with the intent of preventing others from reading one's thoughts or emotions. To perform it, one needs to "rid his mind of emotion, empty it...make it blank and calm." Therefore, instead of simply "blocking" an enemy's attempts in breaking into your mind, Occlumency requires an individual who can leave a blank mindset that would reveal nothing. Advanced Occlumens can discreetly show only portions of their thoughts, the parts that they want the intruder to see (rather than a suspicious "blank slate") or even conjure fake memories. Occlumency mainly serves as the counter to Legilimency, but is also useful against Empaths, and for blocking out Telepathy. However, Occlumency can not guard against possession.
Occlumency is a difficult skill to learn, and your character will need good justification for having it or studying it.
Animagus
An animagus has the ability to transform him or herself into a certain animal at will.
An Animagus' physical condition as an animal reflects his or her physical condition in human shape. For example, Peter Pettigrew's rat Animagus form lacked a toe on one of his front paws because he had lost a finger .
An Animagus retains his or her clothing, spectacles, and so on throughout the transformation, disappearing when the Animagus is in animal shape but reappearing when human shape is resumed. In some cases items such as spectacles may affect the animal's appearance. For example, both Minerva McGonagall and Rita Skeeter wear spectacles in human shape, and these are not only transformed with the Animagus but in these two cases form part of the resulting animal's markings.
An Animagus also has some ability to communicate with true animals.
Animagus's are kept track of by the Ministry and must be legally recorded. Being an "unregistered" animagi is a punishable offense, but not uncommon, depending on one's purpose. The register of Animagus's is publicly accessible.
BECOMING AN ANIMAGUS IS A VERY DIFFICULT PROCESS. You *must* have the skill level (the vast majority of students do not) and a good justification (both a reason for being an animagus and for the time invested) if you wish your character to be approved as such.
